Chairman's Report 4 August

Chairman's Report 4 August

Bernard Hughes4 Aug 2024 - 19:30

1s, 3s and 5s pushing for promotion - and Sunday runs for the youngsters

On Saturday the 1s won on a ropey Kay Plus deck, bowling them out for 79 (Leith Cowie 5-12) and we got them for 5. We are second, 8 points clear of Brentham, who we play next week. Promotion could hinge on that game…

The 2s lost narrowly. Finchley made 142 (Tim Benson 8-57) and we fell agonisingly 13 runs short and are probably now out of the promotion hunt.

Which is very much not the case for the 3s, who won convincingly against North London. Rob Fernandes top-scored with 67 in our 212, and Karthik Shivaram’s 5-22 saw them off for 99. We are now 3rd, 3 points of second in a tight league. Everything still to play for.

The 4s lost a thriller to league leaders Willow Leather. We did brilliantly to recover from 12-6 to post 112 and they got them for 8, their second tight win over us this season. The 4s are now 6th.

The 5s continued their strong run, despite skipper Dave Phillips losing an incredible 12 tosses in a row. But it’s the right way round to lose the tosses and win the games. We posted a decent 259-9 (Hasseb Shahid another fifty and Mad Dog making 25 from no.11) and they only got 149 – with Mad Dog picking up 6-20. Easy Man of the Match decision there. The 5s are 2nd and clear by 13 going into the bye week next week. The 6s sadly lost to Actonians.

Both Sunday friendly sides lost, but there were two impressive batting performances by young players. At Hampstead Nouman Tahir made a brilliant 99*, while at HQ Connie Nur Shah went one better, making his maiden senior ton (it was also his maiden senior 50, so an amazing effort for an U15). Well batted both!

On Thursday the T20 game was abandoned due to weather but we have qualified for finals day top of the table.

This week saw the Devon tour, which went really well. Mad Dog will be reporting in full in the week, but his provisional report is: ‘83rd Devon tour was a great success. Superb weather, not a drop of rain, with 18 players down at various points of the week. Won 2 lost 2, with some great performances on and off pitch. Full report will follow ...’ Thanks from everyone at the club to Dave for his masterminding of the tour, which is a thankless task that makes herding cats look straightforward.

Next Saturday at HQ we will be hosting a reunion for old Turnham Green members of the club. Anyone who would like to catch up with old Green team mates and visit the ground – which is quite different from when some of you played there – please come down in the afternoon during the 1s game.

And then in the evening, from 7pm, we will be having a club social, BBQ and games. The BBQis kindly sponsored by the Dorset Meat Company, who will be providing the meat. This is your chance to see how tasty the meat is and order some yourself. We also need people to help man the BBQ and set up. if you could, please contact Rob Fernandes on robfernandes76@googlemail.com.

Thanks to everyone who represented the club this week.
